Individually, each type of carnitine makes its own contribution to energy production. L-carnitine carries fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells, where they are used to produce biological energy in the form of ATP. Propionyl-L-carnitine is capable of fueling the Krebs cycle (one of the body's main energy production vehicles) at the succinyl-CoA level.
